Hayden Philip MacIntyre
Ontario

While seemingly fine at birth, Hayden Phillip MacIntyre gradually lost physical movement and failed to develop motor skills over his first few months of life. He was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type I/II at 8 months of age. Hayden never rolled, crawled or walked. He is unable to walk and cannot sit unsupported; he also has trouble with head control and limited use of his arms. Even the muscles that control his breathing and swallowing are affected. Hayden has difficulty sleeping given his breathing problems and inability to change positions.

Now three and a half years old, Hayden is an exceptionally bright and joyful boy who has battled more obstacles than many of us deal with in a lifetime. His ever joyful nature draws others to him. He is passionate about life and has very definite likes and dislikes, even at his tender age. His favourite colours are red and purple. He loves music, cars and dinosaurs. He has the need for speed and is in driver training to learn how to operate his brand new specialized power wheelchair. Watch for his license plate, which reads: "Rock ‘‘n Roll".

Updates from 2005:

Hayden is now almost 5 and a half years old and has a little sister, Lauren, who is two.
